Irys falls 76% from a record; $58 million in trades forcibly closed

The little-known token hit a record at 3:25 p.m. ET, then fell about 76% within an hour, yet was still up about 249% over 24 hours. Bets on a fall made up most of the forced closures, according to CoinMarketCap data.

About $58 million of leveraged trades on Irys (IRYS), a young crypto token, were forcibly closed over the 24 hours to 4:20 p.m. ET Friday, more than on bitcoin or ether, as its price soared to a record and then fell about 76% within an hour, while still ending up 248.55% over 24 hours, according to CoinMarketCap data [1][3].

A liquidation happens when an exchange closes a trader's borrowed bet because losses have eaten through the cash put up to back it. A short is a bet that a price will fall.

As of 4:20 p.m. ET, IRYS was up 248.55% over 24 hours but down 65.67% over the past hour, at $0.07562 [1]. It set an all-time high of $0.31484 at 3:25 p.m. ET Friday and was about 76.0% below that peak at the 4:20 p.m. ET price [2]. Its 24-hour trading volume, $1.145 billion, was about 5.9 times its $194.1 million market value [1].

Liquidations on IRYS totaled $58.14 million over 24 hours as of 4:20 p.m. ET. Of that, $52.02 million, about 89%, came from shorts, and $6.11 million from longs, bets on a rise [3]. That put IRYS first in CoinMarketCap's per-asset list, ahead of ether and bitcoin at about $28.9 million each. In the hour to 4:20 p.m. ET, IRYS liquidations were $22.38 million [3].

These figures cover only the derivatives exchanges CoinMarketCap tracks, and its windows roll, so the totals change by the hour [3]. No cause for the move has been confirmed by a primary source.

The figure to watch is the trailing 24-hour total. As Friday's hours roll out of the window, it will show whether Friday's liquidations were concentrated in a few hours.
