Chart Desk: Stablecoin Supply, Tether on Ethereum, Strategy's Bitcoin, PayPal's Dollar Token
The two largest dollar stablecoins, Tether and USDC, lost a combined $3.27 billion in market value over six days, per CoinGecko, while Tether's supply on Ethereum dropped 4.0 billion tokens in one day, Strategy bought 811 bitcoin and PayPal's PYUSD on Ethereum fell 8%.
The two largest dollar stablecoins shrank in market value over six days, and Le Coin's own reads of Ethereum contracts show where some of the movement sat. Four charts, built from CoinGecko market data, SEC filings and Le Coin's contract reads.
Tether and USDC lost $3.27 billion in market value
Fig. 1. Tether's USDT lost about $2.72 billion in market value and Circle's USDC about $0.55 billion over the six days of daily points from Oct. 29 to Nov. 4, a combined $3.27 billion, according to CoinGecko (source 1).
| CoinGecko market cap ($B) | Oct. 29, 00:00 UTC | Nov. 4, 00:00 UTC | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| USDT | 181.657 | 178.941 | −2.717 (−1.50%) |
| USDC | 71.227 | 70.679 | −0.548 (−0.77%) |
Market cap here is CoinGecko's figure: tokens in circulation times price, across every chain the token runs on. USDT fell at every daily point. USDC's path was not a straight line: it rose to $71.72 billion on the Nov. 1 point before falling for three straight points (source 1). Each 00:00 UTC point falls the evening before in ET: 8 p.m. through the Nov. 1 point and 7 p.m. from the Nov. 2 point, after daylight saving time ended.
Tether's supply on Ethereum dropped 4.0 billion tokens
Fig. 2. Tether's USDT supply on Ethereum fell by about 4.0 billion tokens between the Nov. 1 and Nov. 2 closes, from 88.301 billion to 84.299 billion, by Le Coin's reads of the token contract at each day's close (source 2). It did not move on any other day in the window.
| Supply on Ethereum (bn tokens) | Oct. 28–Nov. 1 closes | Nov. 2 close | Nov. 3 close |
|---|---|---|---|
| USDT | 88.301 | 84.299 | 84.299 |
The exact change was 4,002,529,259.73 tokens (source 2). The contract's supply figure, its count of all tokens that exist on that chain, is what Tether calls its authorized amount, and it includes tokens Tether has authorized but not yet issued to anyone. Tether's transparency data, read at 6:38 a.m. ET, listed 84,298,736,466.24 USDT authorized on Ethereum, matching Le Coin's Nov. 2 and Nov. 3 reads, of which about 2.69 billion was authorized but not issued (source 3). Neither the feed nor any Tether statement Le Coin has read explains the change, and these reads cannot say what caused it.
These are Ethereum figures only. They say nothing about USDT on Tron or other chains.
Strategy bought 811 bitcoin
Fig. 3. Strategy said in an 8-K filed Nov. 2 that it bought 811 bitcoin for about $65.5 million, at an average of about $80,846 each, in the week to Nov. 1, and held 849,327 bitcoin as of that date (source 4).
| Strategy reporting week | Bitcoin bought | Holdings at week end | 8-K accession (filed) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oct. 1–4 | 334 | 848,000 | 0001193125-26-413164 (Oct. 5) |
| Oct. 12–18 | 267 | 848,517 | 0001193125-26-424688 (Oct. 19) |
| Oct. 19–25 | 0 | 848,517 | 0001193125-26-431146 (Oct. 26) |
| Oct. 26–Nov. 1 | 811 | 849,327 | 0001193125-26-442707 (Nov. 2) |
The Nov. 2 filing says the purchases were "made using net proceeds from MSTR Stock sales," meaning sales of Strategy's own common shares, and puts the aggregate cost of its holdings at $64.08 billion, an average of $75,451 per bitcoin including fees (source 4). The Oct. 26 filing gave unchanged holdings and no purchase table, so that week is charted as zero. The Oct. 13 filing has no bitcoin table in its body, so the Oct. 5–11 week is not charted (source 5).
PayPal's PYUSD on Ethereum fell 8%
Fig. 4. PYUSD, PayPal's dollar stablecoin, fell by about 163.7 million tokens on Ethereum from the Oct. 28 close to the Nov. 3 close, an 8.39% drop, by Le Coin's reads of the token contract at the same day-close blocks (source 6). The chart covers Ethereum only.
| Supply on Ethereum (bn tokens) | Oct. 28 close | Nov. 3 close |
|---|---|---|
| PYUSD | 1.9504 | 1.7867 |
| USDC (reference) | 47.478 | 46.740 |
Most of the move came in one day: supply fell about 172.8 million tokens from the Oct. 29 close to the Oct. 30 close, after rising on Oct. 29 (source 6). The drop more than erased the 83.5 million-token rise from the Oct. 21 close to the Oct. 27 close shown in last week's Chart Desk: supply at the Nov. 3 close was about 121.8 million tokens below the Oct. 21 close of 1.909 billion. USDC on Ethereum fell 1.55% over the same closes, about 738 million tokens.
These are Ethereum figures only. They are not a measure of PayPal's total PYUSD issuance across chains, and the reads do not say why supply moved.
