Societe Generale will make markets in its own euro token on Kraken

Societe Generale will make markets in its own euro token on Kraken

A major European bank plans to stand on a public crypto exchange and quote prices in its own digital currency. Kraken listed EUR CoinVertible, the euro token issued by Societe Generale's digital-asset arm, on Tuesday, and the bank said it will act as a market maker for it there [1][2].

The bank framed the step as a first of its kind. Societe Generale "will support EUR CoinVertible liquidity as market maker on Kraken, becoming one of the first major banks worldwide to perform this role in crypto markets," the press release, issued in Paris on Nov. 3, said [1]. That is the company's claim. Le Coin hasn't verified which other banks, if any, already do this.

Kraken's announcement was shorter. "EURCV trading is live as of Nov. 3, 2026," it said [2].

The mechanism

EUR CoinVertible, which trades under the ticker EURCV, is a digital token meant to be worth exactly one euro. It's issued by Societe Generale-FORGE, known as SG-FORGE, the bank's digital-asset subsidiary. Kraken describes it as "issued as an e-money token under the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation," the European Union's rulebook for crypto companies and tokens, and says that, "according to SG-FORGE, every EUR CoinVertible is backed by euro-denominated collateral held in segregated accounts at Societe Generale" [2].

A market maker is a firm that keeps offering to buy and sell an asset at quoted prices, so other traders can deal quickly without moving the price much. On a new listing that matters: a token with few buyers and sellers can trade at odd prices or barely trade at all. The release says that, "by acting as a liquidity provider, Societe Generale will help enhance tradability and market efficiency around EUR CoinVertible" [1].

That makes the issuer and a dealer the same group. Societe Generale's subsidiary creates the token, and the bank itself will help set its trading prices on Kraken. The release describes this as an effort to "engage in regulated crypto-asset market making on a leading global crypto platform," drawing on "the bank's decades of experience in providing liquidity across a broad range of financial markets" [1].

The release also points to a second step that hasn't happened yet. "At a later stage, the EUR CoinVertible will be integrated in Kraken's crypto derivatives as the cash leg for collateral management," it said [1]. Collateral is the money traders post to back leveraged bets, and the cash leg is the part held as cash rather than other assets. The release gives no date for that step, and Kraken's post doesn't mention it [1][2].

The evidence

The partners' own language shows where they want this to go. The release says the bank's work is "contributing to the ambition of making EUR CoinVertible the most liquid euro-denominated stablecoin globally" [1]. It also calls EURCV "the first euro-denominated stablecoin issued by a subsidiary of a major European banking group to be available on the platform," and says "millions of Kraken clients will have access" to it [1].

Kraken, which the release says was founded in 2011 and lists "more than 600 digital assets," brings the distribution [1]. SG-FORGE brings a token that sits inside the European regulatory system. The release says SG-FORGE is "authorised as an electronic money institution" by the French banking supervisor, the ACPR [1].

SG-FORGE's CoinVertible page showed about €173.6 million of the token in circulation on Nov. 3 [3]. CoinGecko put its market value at $194.36 million and its 24-hour trading volume at $25.20 million as of 1:11 p.m. EST [4]. That volume counts trading on every venue CoinGecko tracks, not just Kraken, so it says nothing yet about the new listing on its own. Neither company disclosed the terms of Societe Generale's market making or which trading pairs Kraken offers [1][2]. The release's own headline also says the bank is "one of the liquidity providers," which suggests it won't be the only one [1].

The objection

A bank quoting its own token is still a small step, and the access isn't universal. Kraken said trading in its main app and through Instant Buy "will be available once the liquidity conditions are met," meaning once enough buyers and sellers show up to match orders efficiently, and that "geographic restrictions may apply" [2]. The release doesn't say what rules govern a bank's market making in its own token, beyond calling it "regulated" [1]. The design also puts one group on both sides: the firm with the most interest in a tidy price is the one helping to set it.

The tell (Le Coin's view)

The interesting part isn't the listing. It's that Societe Generale chose to put its own trading desk behind its token instead of leaving that job entirely to crypto specialists. That's a bank treating a crypto exchange as a market it serves directly. The derivatives step has no date, so for now it is a statement of intent.
