NBA names Kalshi and Polymarket Preferred Prediction Market Exchanges

The league's Oct. 26 release designates both platforms as Preferred Prediction Market Exchanges, pairs the label with Sportradar official data and personnel trading bans, and sits beside a separate CFTC memorandum of understanding.

The National Basketball Association designated Kalshi and Polymarket as the league's Preferred Prediction Market Exchanges on Oct. 26, tying the commercial label to official NBA data, U.S. marketing rights, and written integrity limits on who may trade NBA event contracts [1]. The designation is a league commercial and integrity framework for prediction markets, not a sportsbook license and not a CFTC order.

Prediction markets here are event contracts that settle to outcomes such as game results. Preferred status, on the league's wording, gives each platform rights to use NBA intellectual property, marketing rights, and promotional activations across U.S. media channels, plus official NBA data from Sportradar, the league's Official Data Distribution Partner, to operate and settle authorized NBA-related markets [1].

What Preferred status changes

The league release puts three integrity bars next to the Preferred label: limitations on permissible markets; affirmative prohibitions on trading NBA event contracts by league and team personnel; and information-sharing obligations on investigations and suspicious trading [1]. Kalshi's company page restates the same cluster: Sportradar data in settlement, integrity cooperation, and explicit bans on league and team personnel trading those contracts [2].

Kalshi's Oct. 26 company post on X called the deal a Preferred Prediction Market Exchange partnership with "Official NBA data to settle trades, stronger safeguards, and NBA branding on Kalshi" [3]. Polymarket's same-day post said Polymarket is "now a Preferred Prediction Market Exchange of the NBA," citing official NBA data and exclusive activations [4]. The league release confirms both designations in one document, so this is not a one-sided partner claim [1].

Scott Kaufman-Ross, NBA Head of Media Distribution & Partnerships, said protecting the integrity of the game is the top priority and that the partnerships help establish safeguards while creating new ways to engage fans [1]. Adam Barrick, Head of Sports Partnerships at Kalshi, and Ari Borod, President, Sports Business Development at Polymarket, each supplied company quotes in the same release [1]. None of the primaries state a dollar amount for the Preferred deals [1][2][3][4].

The CFTC MOU sits beside Preferred, not inside it

The same Oct. 26 announcement includes a Memorandum of Understanding with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission on cooperation and information sharing for NBA prediction markets [1]. That MOU is league-regulator cooperation language. It is separate from Le Coin's KEEP on the CFTC's Utah preemption suit, and separate from Polymarket's product note on five-minute crypto up/downs in its U.S. app. Readers should not collapse those three items into one.

Authorized is not Preferred

The league also says it expanded its agreement with DraftKings to include prediction markets and nationwide promotion, and that it plans to expand with other sports-betting partners under an "Authorized Prediction Market Operators" track [1]. The release keeps the labels apart: Preferred Prediction Market Exchanges for Kalshi and Polymarket; Authorized Prediction Market Operators for the DraftKings expansion and planned others [1]. Equating Preferred exchanges with sportsbooks would overwrite the league's own taxonomy.

The objection, and the tell

A fair objection is that Preferred is still a commercial and integrity designation, not a published catalog of every authorized NBA market already settling on Sportradar data under the new bars [1][2]. Another limit is the missing economics: no fee, volume, or contract-value figure appears in the Oct. 26 primaries [1][2][3][4]. In Le Coin's view, the live question is whether Preferred status shows up as checkable, data-settled NBA markets with the personnel trading bans enforced as written.

What would change the view is a public, dated rollout of authorized NBA markets that cite Sportradar official data in settlement rules matching the Preferred rights language, plus any disclosed enforcement of the personnel trading prohibitions [1][2]. A second tell is whether the Authorized expansions the league says are coming in the coming weeks stay labeled Authorized, or whether the Preferred set grows beyond Kalshi and Polymarket [1]. Today's checkable fact is the Oct. 26 league release naming both Preferred exchanges, the Sportradar data path, the personnel bans, and the separate CFTC MOU [1].
