Arbitrum routes a slice of network revenue to Offchain Labs
A new Developer Guild is funded by a small share of Arbitrum chains' revenue and fee-auction proceeds, and its only member, Offchain Labs, gets all of it for now.
Arbitrum will send a share of its network revenue to Offchain Labs, the company that built and maintains its core software, through a new Arbitrum Developer Guild, according to a post on the Arbitrum DAO forum on Oct. 23.
The post says the Guild is funded by two streams. The first is 2% of the net protocol revenue earned by Arbitrum Chains, the separate networks built on Arbitrum's technology, more than 30 of which already contribute. The second is 3% of the proceeds from Arbitrum One's priority gas auctions and its Sequencer Fast Feed, services that let traders pay extra to have transactions handled sooner or see them earlier.
Offchain Labs, named in the post as "Offchain," is the Guild's first and only member. It will receive the funds the Guild already holds and "100% of the revenue going forward as long as they remain the sole member," the post says. Membership is invite-only and merit-based, and members must show that their company's success "substantially depends on Arbitrum winning."
The post does not give the Guild's current balance. It calls the funding "relatively nascent" and says Arbitrum anticipates that the Guild will "reduce the amount Offchain needs to request from the DAO in the future."
The fee auction has a first data point. In a post on its official X account, Arbitrum said Arbitrum One "has generated $300K in priority fee revenue, with 21M transactions using PGA in just a month after launch." That figure is Arbitrum's own and covers the whole auction, not the Guild's 3% share.
In Le Coin's view, the change matters more for incentives than for money. Tying a slice of the core developer's funding to network revenue gives it a direct stake in that revenue growing, which is the stated aim. How large the stake becomes depends on revenue figures the post does not yet provide.
