Evening brief: FINMA approves Switzerland's first bitcoin ETF, Strive closes $630 million preferred sale, bitcoin ends 0.86% above Monday
FINMA approved Switzerland's first exchange-traded retail fund that invests directly in bitcoin, Mastercard opened its AI-agent payment system to developers, Strive closed its $630 million SATS preferred offering, and bitcoin was at $82,499.45 at the 4:00 p.m. ET close of the US session, 0.86% above Monday's close, per CoinGecko.
Switzerland's financial regulator, FINMA, approved the country's first exchange-traded retail fund that holds bitcoin directly, and Mastercard opened its payment system for AI agents to developers, with Coinbase wallets and the Base network in its demonstration. Swiss retail investors get a regulated fund that owns bitcoin itself once it lists, though FINMA named neither the fund nor a date, and developers can now build on the APIs Mastercard piloted with Coinbase, Base and BVNK. [2][3]
Strive also closed its $630 million preferred stock sale, and Tuesday was the last day to sell two CoinShares crypto ETFs before they liquidate for cash. Bitcoin ended the U.S. session 0.86% above Monday's close, climbing back from an overnight dip. [1][5][7]

What printed
01 · FINMA approves Switzerland's first exchange-traded fund that holds bitcoin directly. FINMA said it has, "for the first time, approved an exchange-traded retail fund that invests directly in Bitcoin," which Swiss law treats as an "other fund for alternative investments" with a specific risk. The regulator exempted the fund from the applicable risk-diversification rules, citing bitcoin's "long trading history and a particularly high trading volume compared with other cryptocurrencies." As early as 2021, FINMA authorized a crypto fund only for qualified investors, one that invests mainly in a basket of cryptocurrencies. FINMA named no fund, provider or listing date, said other providers "have also submitted or announced applications," and warned that investments in bitcoin, even through an approved ETF, "remain highly risky." [2]
02 · Mastercard opens its AI-agent payment system to developers, with Coinbase and Base in the demonstration. Mastercard said it is opening Agent Pay for Machines Early Access, which gives developers "the first version of our buyer- and seller-side APIs" along with a toolkit, sandbox and documentation, after pilots with Cloudflare, Ant International, AIsa, Base, BVNK, Coinbase and Hype. The system builds on x402, which Mastercard describes as "an open protocol that lets digital services request payment online." An agent signs a voucher, "a secure promise to pay within its approved limit"; those vouchers move "off-chain at machine speed," and providers "combine vouchers and redeem them later." In Mastercard's demonstration, "Coinbase Developer Platform provides the wallet infrastructure used to fund the agent, while Base provides the on-chain settlement network." BVNK, the stablecoin infrastructure provider Mastercard acquired in August 2026, handles payment and settlement on both sides "in fiat or stablecoins." Mastercard gave no fees, volumes or general-availability date. [3][4]
03 · Strive closes its $630 million SATS preferred stock sale. Strive, a bitcoin-treasury company listed on Nasdaq as ASST, closed its "upsized initial public offering" of 7,000,000 shares of 15.00% Series A Perpetual SATS Preferred Stock at $90 a share, or $630 million gross by Le Coin's arithmetic. SATS accrues cumulative dividends of 15% a year on a $100 stated amount, payable "when, as and if declared" by Strive's board. Strive said the shares were expected to begin trading on the Nasdaq Global Market under the ticker SATS on or around Oct. 20. SATS sits below Strive's existing SATA preferred, and Chairman and CEO Matt Cole said it strengthens "SATA’s credit profile by adding junior capital beneath it." [5]
04 · CoinShares' bitcoin-and-ether futures ETF and its altcoins ETF reach their last day. Nasdaq filed a Form 25 at 4:06 p.m. ET Tuesday to delist the CoinShares Bitcoin and Ether ETF (BTF) and the CoinShares Altcoins ETF (DIME), a step in the wind-down CoinShares announced Sept. 18. CoinShares set Oct. 20 as the last day to sell. Holders still in a fund when it liquidates, "on or around October 21, 2026," receive "a cash redemption amount equal to the net asset value" once the fund has covered its charges, taxes and expenses. BTF invests in bitcoin and ether futures and, per CoinShares, "does not provide direct exposure to the price of bitcoin or ether"; DIME invests in listed altcoin exchange-traded products. [6][7]
