Standard Chartered offers Hong Kong companies bank deposits on a blockchain

Standard Chartered offers Hong Kong companies bank deposits on a blockchain

A corporate treasurer at a Standard Chartered client in Hong Kong can now hold deposits recorded on a blockchain that the bank says can be transferred in real time to other participating banks, with the banks settling between themselves in central bank money on a 24/7 basis [1].

Standard Chartered said on Nov. 2 that it had launched "its Tokenised Deposits solution in Hong Kong, making it the first market in the Group to offer the solution to corporate clients" [1]. A tokenised deposit is an ordinary bank deposit recorded as a token on a blockchain, so it can be moved and programmed like a digital asset while staying a claim on the bank.

The bank is not new to the Hong Kong Monetary Authority's pilot. Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) has been on the HKMA's list of tokenised deposit banks in Ensemble TX since 2025 [3]. What changed is that corporate clients can now use the product.

The mechanism

Standard Chartered says the product runs on its own blockchain and connects to other banks through Ensemble TX, the HKMA's pilot settlement system. "Developed with support from the HKMA's Supervisory Incubator for Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) and powered by Ensemble TX infrastructure, the solution enables tokenised deposits to be transferred in real time across participating banks, with inter-bank settlement of tokenised deposits transactions in central bank money, including wholesale central bank digital currency ("wCBDC"), on a 24/7 basis," the release said [1]. A wholesale central bank digital currency is a digital form of central bank money that only banks and similar institutions hold.

The use the bank names first is moving cash around a company. The release says eligible clients can use "commercial bank deposits within digital treasury and investment workflows, including intragroup liquidity management" [1]. It names corporate treasurers, banks, investment platforms and digital asset businesses as the intended users.

The evidence

Standard Chartered names three clients. "The solution is already gaining traction with China AMC, Finloop and PantherTrade executing live tokenised deposit transactions and settlement of tokenised money market funds powered by the HKMA Ensemble TX," the bank said [1]. A tokenised money market fund is a fund share recorded as a token.

All three appear on the HKMA's list of other industry pioneers in Ensemble TX: China Asset Management (Hong Kong) since 2025, and Finloop and Panthertrade (Hong Kong) since 2026 [3]. HashKey Group, which the bank says "also joins the ecosystem," is on the same list as a 2026 joiner [1][3].

The bank's technology partner is a different case. Standard Chartered says it is "partnering with Fireblocks to embed banking capabilities in the platform and provide native access to the digital asset client ecosystem" [1]. Fireblocks does not appear in either of the HKMA's participant annexes [3].

Neither Standard Chartered nor the HKMA gives volumes, values or a client count for the product or for Ensemble TX [1][2].

Mary Huen, Standard Chartered's chief executive for Hong Kong, Greater China and North Asia, tied the launch to the pilot. "Standard Chartered has been a major participant in the HKMA's Ensemble TX, contributing to its development and some of its earliest real-value transaction use cases," she said. "Building on this foundation, we are proud to launch our Tokenised Deposits in Hong Kong, the first in our global network" [1].

Ole Matthiessen, global head of transaction services and digital assets, described the aim as "taking tokenisation from experimentation towards broader scalable adoption" [1]. The bank "plans to expand the solution to more markets over time," the release said, without naming them [1].

The objection

A product launch with three named clients is a start, not a market. The release describes what the system can do. Ensemble TX is still described by the HKMA as a pilot [2], so the settlement leg behind the 24/7 claim sits inside a program the regulator runs.

The tell (Le Coin's view)

Le Coin's view: The detail that matters for treasurers is "across participating banks." A deposit token is only as useful as the number of banks that will accept it, and in Hong Kong that list is the HKMA's annex, now 12 banks long [3]. The next figure worth watching is the first one either the bank or the HKMA publishes on value settled.

Stop

Standard Chartered has launched tokenised deposits for corporate clients in Hong Kong, with inter-bank settlement in central bank money on a 24/7 basis through the HKMA's Ensemble TX, the bank says. It names China AMC, Finloop and PantherTrade as live users. Fireblocks is its technology partner, not an Ensemble participant on the HKMA's list.
