Threshold pauses its Bitcoin-backed token as Aave freezes it on Ethereum

Threshold has stopped new tBTC minting and redemptions for what it calls security maintenance. Aave froze the token on its main Ethereum market as a precaution. Threshold says holding and transferring tBTC is unaffected.

If you hold tBTC, nothing about the token in your wallet changed overnight. tBTC is a token meant to track bitcoin one-for-one, and you can still hold it, send it and use it, Threshold says. What you cannot do for now is turn bitcoin into new tBTC or ask to swap tBTC back for bitcoin through the Threshold app. And if your tBTC sits on Aave's main Ethereum market, you can no longer add more or use it to borrow more.

Threshold Network said in a post on X at 6:35 p.m. ET on Oct. 30 that it had "temporarily paused new BTC deposits/tBTC minting and new Bitcoin redemption requests through the Threshold app as a precaution while security maintenance is completed" [1]. About eleven and a half hours later, at 6:01 a.m. ET on Oct. 31, Aave's guardian multisig, a group of key holders that can make emergency changes, froze tBTC on Aave V3 Ethereum Core, on a recommendation from LlamaRisk, Aave's risk adviser [2][3].

What tBTC is, and what stopped

tBTC is a token meant to track bitcoin one-for-one. Each token is backed by bitcoin held by Threshold's system, so people can use the value of their bitcoin inside Ethereum apps. Minting is the step in: you send bitcoin to Threshold and receive the same amount of tBTC. Redeeming is the step out: you hand back tBTC and get bitcoin in return. Both are now on hold.

Threshold's post spells out the edges. "Pending redemptions may still be paid on Bitcoin, but final settlement on Ethereum is paused and some transactions may be delayed," it said. It asked users not to send bitcoin to deposit addresses generated earlier and not to start mints or redemptions "through alternative interfaces during this pause." People who already deposited should keep their receipts and transaction hashes and "not repeat the transaction to try to clear a pending status." And: "This pause does not affect holding, transferring or using tBTC" [1].

On timing, Threshold said it "will share confirmed updates, including an estimated time for resuming normal operations when available, through Threshold's official channels" [1]. As of 9:10 a.m. ET Saturday, its account had posted nothing further, and Le Coin found no separate Threshold blog post or status page about the pause.

What Aave did

Aave's response is on its governance forum. LlamaRisk wrote that it "recommended a pre-emptive freeze of tBTC on Aave V3 Ethereum Core," with the aim "to prevent Aave's exposure to tBTC from growing while the pause is in place by stopping new borrowing against tBTC and new tBTC deposits" [2]. A freeze, in Aave's terms, means the market accepts no new supply of the asset and the asset adds no new borrowing power. The guardian multisig executed it in transaction 0x9985…ac82, which Etherscan shows as successful at 10:01:11 UTC [3].

Aave says existing positions are unaffected. "Users can still repay and withdraw; liquidations continue to run; and borrowing against other collateral works as normal," LlamaRisk wrote. "tBTC keeps its liquidation threshold, so the health factors of existing positions do not change and no position becomes liquidatable due to the freeze" [2].

The freeze is narrow. tBTC is listed on Aave V3 on Ethereum Core, Base and Arbitrum, but the Base and Arbitrum markets were already frozen in earlier rounds of retiring assets, "making Ethereum Core the only market where tBTC could still support new borrowing," the thread says. "No other reserve is affected, and no market has been paused" [2]. Aave did not publish how much tBTC sits in its Ethereum market, and this piece gives no figure for it.

The evidence

Figure 1. tBTC by the numbers

MeasureValue
tBTC price$77,532
Bitcoin price$77,458
tBTC market value$324.5 million
tBTC in circulationabout 4,185
tBTC traded, past 24 hours$5.4 million

Source: Powered by CoinGecko API, pulled 9:09 a.m. ET Oct. 31, 2026 (data as of 9:08 a.m. ET).

The market has not marked tBTC down. At the time of the pull, CoinGecko showed tBTC about $74 above bitcoin, within 0.1%. With minting and redemption paused, that link now rests on trading alone, not on the ability to swap in and out. A day's trading of $5.4 million is small next to a token supply worth $324.5 million.

The objection

A reader could fairly say this is a non-story. Threshold says the pause is a precaution, the token still trades at bitcoin's price, and Aave's freeze leaves every existing loan exactly as it was. Weekend maintenance happens.

Le Coin's view: the precaution is the story. A token backed by bitcoin is only as good as the exit back to bitcoin, and that exit is closed for now. Aave read it the same way. It did not wait for an explanation before stopping its exposure from growing, and it says it will undo the freeze only "once we have assurance that tBTC operations return to normal" [2]. That is how a lender should treat collateral it cannot redeem.

The tell (Le Coin's view)

Watch Threshold's official channels for the estimated restart time it has promised, and watch the Aave thread, where LlamaRisk says it will propose "restorative measures" and post the update [2]. Until then, the gap between tBTC and bitcoin on CoinGecko is the number to check.

Stop

Threshold says new tBTC minting and redemptions are paused, and Aave has frozen the token on its main Ethereum market. Existing tBTC can still be held and moved, Threshold says, and Aave says existing positions are unaffected.
