Initia says MoveVM bug let attacker bridge out $2.7M

The project's first official cause-and-loss account names a script-caching flaw, about $2.7 million bridged off-chain, and says the Initia L1 and its rollups remain halted.

Initia, in its first official account of Friday's incident, says an attacker exploited a bug in MoveVM script caching at 10:59 a.m. ET on Oct. 23, credited itself unbacked tokens, and bridged out about $2.7 million before the chain stopped — while the Initia L1 and its rollups remain halted [1].

MoveVM is the Move-language engine Initia uses to run smart-contract code. According to Initia's post at 4:46 a.m. ET on Oct. 24, the attacker "artificially spoofed the MoveVM state," receiving unbacked WETH, iUSD and USDC "without changing the corresponding token's total supply." No native INIT was minted, Initia said, and total INIT supply is unaffected [1].

Before the halt, Initia said, the attacker bridged out roughly $2.7 million: 105 WETH and about 1.4 million AUSD0 via LayerZero, plus about 1.08 million USDC via Noble and CCTP. AUSD0 is Initia's name for that bridged asset; it is not Agora's AUSD dollar stablecoin. Initia said the proceeds were swapped for 1,135.52 ETH at the Ethereum address 0x358ef0130f7a5aa516dcd81bdc80b18cde41cac8 [1]. Le Coin confirmed that address held about 1,135.52 ETH as of Saturday morning ET [2].

"The Initia L1 and Rollups remain halted," the project wrote. It said a security fix is expected to be "completed and audited in a few days," that asset recovery is ongoing, and that a full post-mortem will follow. It did not name a restart time [1].

Separately, Strat, an app built on Initia, said at 3:05 p.m. ET on Oct. 23 that it had halted the Strat Network as a precaution and would close and settle positions [3].
