Bitcoin funds pull in $1 billion in three days after a week of withdrawals

US spot bitcoin ETFs took in a net $1.07 billion from Oct. 19 to Oct. 21, according to Farside Investors, after investors pulled a net $228.4 million the week before.

Investors put a net $1.07 billion into US spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds over the three trading days to Oct. 21, according to Farside Investors. That matters because these funds let investors hold bitcoin through an ordinary brokerage account, and their flows show how that money is moving. The three days followed a week in which the same funds lost a net $228.4 million.

The inflow came in two large days with a quiet one between. Funds took in $526.7 million on Oct. 19, $23.2 million on Oct. 20 and $524.8 million on Oct. 21, for a combined $1,074.7 million by Le Coin's sum of Farside's daily totals.

The two big days had different shapes. On Oct. 19, BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) took in $665.2 million on its own, while Fidelity's FBTC lost $83.6 million and Grayscale's GBTC lost $54.9 million. On Oct. 21 the inflow was broader: IBIT added $235.0 million, FBTC $212.7 million, GBTC $32.6 million, Bitwise's BITB $19.2 million, ARK 21Shares' ARKB $9.8 million, Grayscale's Bitcoin Mini Trust $8.2 million and Franklin's EZBC $7.3 million. No fund reported an outflow that day.

In Le Coin's view, the breadth of Oct. 21 is the more informative detail. One fund carrying a day can reflect a single large client, while seven funds taking money on the same day points to demand spread across several issuers' platforms. The objection is that flows describe what fund investors did, not what prices will do. Three days is also a short window, and the week before shows how quickly a run of flows can reverse.

Ether funds tell a quieter story. US spot ether ETFs took in a net $14.9 million on Oct. 21, their first inflow after five straight days of withdrawals totalling $388.9 million from Oct. 14 to Oct. 20.

Across all funds, Farside puts cumulative net inflows into US spot bitcoin ETFs since their January 2024 launch at $58,024 million.

The next test is whether next week's flows hold that breadth across issuers.
