Mastercard and BVNK Launch a Single Platform for Fiat and Stablecoins

The Global Money Platform puts fiat and stablecoin accounts, conversion, stablecoin-linked cards and bank payouts behind one API, after Mastercard's August acquisition of BVNK.

Mastercard and BVNK have launched the Mastercard Global Money Platform, which puts Mastercard's payment network and BVNK's stablecoin infrastructure behind a single API (source 1). Banks, fintechs and enterprises can use it to embed multi-currency accounts holding fiat and stablecoins, real-time conversion, stablecoin-linked cards and local bank payouts through Mastercard Move into their own products, under their own brand (source 1).

Mastercard says the launch "marks the first major integration of Mastercard and BVNK capabilities since the acquisition of BVNK in August 2026" (source 1). The platform is "available now through BVNK," according to both companies (sources 1, 2).

What the platform does

At its center is what both companies call the global money account, a multi-currency account where fiat and stablecoins sit side by side, with conversion between them through one API (sources 1, 2). BVNK's post says the accounts come with custodial and self-custodial options and rewards on eligible balances (source 2). Mastercard says customers can start with the pieces they need and add more as they become available (source 1). Mastercard says customers can also use the platform to manage their own treasury, payments and settlement activity directly (source 1). Its release gives the example of a manufacturing business that receives multiple currencies and pays global suppliers, which today means juggling separate accounts, vendors and pre-funded balances across markets. Mastercard says the platform gives such a business "a single place to manage liquidity, move between fiat currencies and stablecoins, and handle receivables and payouts" (source 1).

Payouts run through Mastercard Move, which Mastercard describes as reaching more than 17 billion endpoints. Users can fund local-currency payments from stablecoin balances straight into a recipient's bank account, with coverage expected to expand to more than 40 currencies across 200-plus countries and territories in 2027, Mastercard says (source 1).

Spending works through cards. A user spends a stablecoin balance with a stablecoin-linked card across Mastercard's acceptance network, which Mastercard puts at hundreds of millions of merchant locations, so in the card flow the merchant does not need to handle stablecoins (sources 1, 2). Mastercard says card issuing is available in 130-plus countries (source 1).

In a separate, acquirer-side feature, BVNK's post says acquirers, payment service providers and digital platforms can use the platform to accept stablecoins and settle card transactions in real time (source 2).

BVNK's post also says financial institutions can extend stablecoin capabilities and global reach to existing customer accounts "while maintaining full client ownership" (source 2). The post puts digital currency payments for goods and services at "at least $350 billion in annual volume," according to BVNK (source 2).

BVNK's post, unlike Mastercard's release, names networks and coins. It says businesses get access to "20+ blockchain networks and payment rails," including new additions Stellar, Arc, Monad, Plasma and Tempo, and "multiple stablecoins including USDC and OUSD" (source 2). Neither source gives fees, pricing or transaction volumes for the platform.

Both companies say future support is planned for agentic commerce and other regulated forms of money, including tokenized deposits (sources 1, 2). Neither gives a date.

Who is signing on

Both sources name Nuvei and Marqeta as among the first to integrate the platform, alongside Ontop, Bolt Group and Almond FinTech (sources 1, 2). Harmse's quote in Mastercard's release refers to enterprise customers including Beem, which neither company lists among the first integrators (source 1).

What they said

"We believe the future of commerce will be built on interoperability across multiple forms of money," said Raj Dhamodharan, whom Mastercard's release identifies as executive vice president, Blockchain and Digital Assets at Mastercard (source 1). BVNK's post bylines him as "EVP & Global Head of Crypto & Digital Assets at Mastercard" (source 2). He added: "This is an important step in bringing our multi-money strategy to life and enabling the next generation of programmable and agentic commerce" (source 1).

"With Global Money Platform, we're delivering on our promise to connect BVNK's technology with the scale and trust of Mastercard," said Chris Harmse, co-founder and chief business officer at BVNK, in Mastercard's release (source 1). He added: "Global Money Platform will become the single infrastructure layer not just for stablecoins, but for every form of money" (source 1).

Phil Fayer, chair and CEO of Nuvei, said in Mastercard's release: "The future of global commerce depends on money moving as freely as the businesses and consumers it serves, across borders, currencies and increasingly, between traditional and digital forms of money." He continued: "Stablecoins are becoming an increasingly important part of that future, and our work with Mastercard and BVNK will help us bring these capabilities to more businesses, giving them greater choice and flexibility in how they manage and move money around the world" (source 1). BVNK's post carries a different quote from him, crediting "Philip Fayer, founder, chairman, and CEO of Nuvei": "Global Money Platform gives us the tools to continue building products that offer our customers that choice and interoperability, without the need to stitch together multiple infrastructure partners" (source 2).

What it means

In Le Coin's view, the news is the packaging. Mastercard is selling stablecoin accounts, conversion, cards and payouts as one integration to businesses that already use its network, rather than asking merchants to take stablecoins. The card leg keeps the merchant side unchanged.

In Le Coin's view, the next thing to check is when the first integrators put the accounts or cards in front of customers. Neither source gives a date for that.
