BlackRock Digital-Asset ETFs Draw $7.9 Billion in Third-Quarter Net Inflows
BlackRock's Q3 earnings release, filed as an 8-K exhibit Oct. 14, shows digital-asset AUM rising to $79.6 billion from $48.8 billion, on $7.9 billion of net inflows and $22.9 billion of market gains, all in ETFs.
BlackRock's digital-asset products took in $7.907 billion of net inflows in the third quarter. The figure is in the company's Q3 earnings release, filed as Exhibit 99.1 to a Form 8-K at 6:39 a.m. ET on Oct. 14 (sources 1, 2). Digital-asset assets under management rose to $79.632 billion at Sept. 30 from $48.839 billion at June 30.
Most of that rise was price, not new money. The release's quarterly AUM rollforward attributes $22.889 billion of the increase to market change and a negative $3 million to foreign exchange, alongside the $7.907 billion of net inflows (source 2). Market moves added nearly three dollars of AUM for every dollar clients sent in.
| Q3 2026, digital assets ($M) | Amount |
|---|---|
| AUM, June 30, 2026 | 48,839 |
| Net inflows | 7,907 |
| Market change | 22,889 |
| FX impact | (3) |
| AUM, Sept. 30, 2026 | 79,632 |
| Average AUM, Q3 | 63,598 |
The line sits entirely inside ETFs. In the release's breakdown by client type, the ETF digital-assets row repeats the same numbers exactly: $48.839 billion opening, $7.907 billion of flows, $79.632 billion closing (source 2). No digital-asset AUM appears under retail or institutional mandates. The release does not name individual funds; it says only "digital assets," so this piece does not split the total by fund.
Small revenue, large flows
The objection is scale. Digital assets produced $39 million of base fees and securities lending revenue in the quarter, out of a firm total of $6.036 billion, according to the release (source 2). That is 0.65% by Le Coin arithmetic; the release rounds it to 1%. At $79.632 billion, digital assets were about 0.51% of BlackRock's $15.488 trillion in total AUM at quarter end, also Le Coin arithmetic.
Flows tell a different story. The $7.907 billion was about 3.8% of BlackRock's $205.466 billion of total Q3 net inflows, and about 5.9% of its $134.509 billion of ETF net inflows (source 2; Le Coin arithmetic). A product line earning well under 1% of revenue drew several times that share of new money.
The fee rate is the tell on why. Annualizing the $39 million of quarterly revenue against $63.598 billion of average AUM gives roughly 25 basis points, a Le Coin approximation that ignores day-count. That is a low-fee product at large scale, so revenue tracks the coin price more than the sales effort.
The year is not the quarter
The year-to-date table complicates the headline. For the nine months to Sept. 30, digital-asset AUM moved from $78.435 billion to $79.632 billion, on $5.726 billion of net inflows, a $4.516 billion market decline and a negative $13 million FX impact (source 2). Those four lines reconcile: 78,435 plus 5,726 minus 4,516 minus 13 equals 79,632.
Subtracting the third quarter from the year implies the first half saw net outflows of about $2.181 billion (5,726 minus 7,907). That is Le Coin arithmetic, not a figure BlackRock reports, and it rests on the year-to-date and quarterly tables being consistent. The third quarter reversed roughly six months of net redemptions rather than extending a steady run.
The twelve-month view is weaker still. The release's trailing-twelve-month table starts digital-asset AUM at $103.965 billion and ends it at $79.632 billion, with $6.305 billion of net inflows outweighed by a $30.629 billion market decline and a negative $9 million FX impact (source 2). Clients added money over the year; prices took away more.
| Digital assets ($M) | Opening AUM | Net inflows | Market change | FX | Closing AUM | Average AUM |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Q3 2026 | 48,839 | 7,907 | 22,889 | (3) | 79,632 | 63,598 |
| Year to date | 78,435 | 5,726 | (4,516) | (13) | 79,632 | 66,176 |
| Trailing 12 months | 103,965 | 6,305 | (30,629) | (9) | 79,632 | 73,276 |
What the release does not say
The release does not call the quarter a record for digital assets, and this piece does not either. It gives no breakdown by coin, no fund-level flows and no commentary on digital assets in the figures Le Coin reviewed. No executive remarks from BlackRock's earnings call are quoted, because Le Coin has not reviewed a transcript or webcast of it.
The objection to reading much into one quarter is that a $22.9 billion market gain on $48.8 billion of opening AUM shows how price-driven the line is. A reversal in coin prices would cut AUM, and with it the $39 million of revenue, regardless of flows.
The tell to watch is whether flows hold when prices do not. The first half, by Le Coin's subtraction, had outflows; the third quarter had $7.9 billion of inflows alongside a large rally. The fourth-quarter release will show whether the ETF buyer is following price or building a position.
