Ripple Prime Opens Real-World-Asset Perpetual Swaps to Institutions, Virtu Among Clients

Ripple Prime, acting as principal, now offers swaps that reference Trade.xyz perpetual futures on Hyperliquid, traded around the clock with cross-margin and RLUSD collateral where available.

Ripple Prime, Ripple's prime brokerage business, has launched support for real-world asset (RWA) perpetual swaps for institutional clients, Ripple said on Oct. 15 (source 1). The swaps track more than 100 reference markets spanning equities, equity indices, ETFs, metals, energy and FX, and Ripple says they are "traded and settled 24/7" (source 1).

Ripple says institutional clients including Virtu are already trading the swaps (source 1). The offering is currently available out of Ripple Prime's CIV BVI license, and Ripple says it intends to offer it from additional regions "in the near future" (source 1).

Ripple frames the launch as part of a shift toward continuous market access. Its release says onchain infrastructure is "enabling continuous exposure to markets that have historically been limited to fixed trading windows," and that perpetual swaps linked to traditional assets are part of that shift (source 1). Ripple describes itself in the release as holding more than 85 licenses and offering payments, custody, prime brokerage and treasury management (source 1).

How the swaps work

The client does not trade on a decentralized exchange itself. According to the release, the RWA swaps are "traded through Ripple Prime as principal," which means Ripple Prime is the client's counterparty on each swap (source 1).

What the swaps track is set elsewhere. Ripple says they "reference perpetual futures contracts listed by Trade.xyz on Hyperliquid," which it describes as "a high-performance decentralized derivatives venue" (source 1). A perpetual future is a derivative with no expiry date, so a position can stay open indefinitely as long as margin is maintained. Ripple's swaps take their reference from those listed contracts, while the client's contract is with Ripple Prime.

Because the reference markets trade continuously, "including weekends," Ripple says clients can manage exposure to traditional asset classes outside typical exchange hours (source 1). That is the core pitch. As a hypothetical example, an institution holding stock index exposure through a regular exchange could adjust a related swap position on a Saturday, when that exchange is shut.

The release does not name any individual reference market, ticker or contract. It gives only the categories and the count of more than 100 (source 1). It also gives no fees, spreads, margin levels, position limits or trading volumes for the product.

Margin and collateral

Ripple says clients can cross-margin their RWA swap exposures against the other asset classes Ripple Prime supports (source 1). Cross-margining lets gains or collateral in one part of a portfolio count toward the margin owed on another, rather than funding each position separately.

Clients can also post Ripple USD, Ripple's dollar stablecoin known as RLUSD, as collateral for RWA swap transactions (source 1). Ripple says the result is "a single counterparty relationship, centralized risk management, and consolidated margin across clients' portfolios" (source 1).

The RLUSD option has a limit. A footnote in the release says "RLUSD availability may differ per jurisdiction," and tells clients to check with their Ripple Prime representative (source 1). The release does not list which jurisdictions can or cannot use it.

What Ripple and Virtu said

"RWA swaps are where traditional and digital markets meet," said Michael Higgins, international CEO of Ripple Prime (source 1). "Institutions want exposure to equities, commodities, and currencies with the round-the-clock access and efficiencies of digital infrastructure."

Higgins said Ripple Prime "was built to operate in both worlds, with deep experience clearing trades and managing digital collateral and risk across venues, 24/7." He added that the swaps let clients "execute increasingly sophisticated trading strategies and actively manage their portfolios in response to today's dynamic global markets" (source 1).

Virtu's role, as the release states it, is as a client trading the swaps. "Virtu is ramping up across emerging liquidity pools, and Ripple Prime's 24/7 cross-margining across asset classes helps us expand our presence more efficiently as markets move toward round-the-clock access," said Scotte Moegling, head of business development for digital assets at Virtu (source 1). The release does not say how large Virtu's trading is or which markets it trades.

Ripple also says there has been "exponential growth in trading volumes of perpetual futures contracts tied to real world assets year-to-date," but gives no figure or source for that claim (source 1).

What it means

In Le Coin's view, the notable piece is the structure. Institutions get prices set on a decentralized venue without holding positions there directly, because Ripple Prime stands in the middle as principal. That keeps the familiar prime brokerage relationship, a single counterparty and one margin pool, while the reference prices come from onchain markets that never close.

In Le Coin's view, it also gives RLUSD another job inside Ripple's own business, as margin collateral, though the jurisdiction footnote means not every client can use it.

In Le Coin's view, the things to watch next are which regions Ripple adds beyond the BVI license, whether it names more clients alongside Virtu, and whether it discloses any volume for the product. The release offers no timeline for any of those.
