NYSE owner ICE signs deal to bring round-the-clock crypto-style futures onshore
ICE agreed to be the exclusive operator of Trade[XYZ]'s regulated markets and is taking a minority stake. Nothing trades until regulators sign off.
Intercontinental Exchange, the owner of the New York Stock Exchange, has signed a definitive agreement to bring Trade[XYZ]'s Hyperliquid-based perpetual futures markets onshore in the United States, a push into the round-the-clock, crypto-style trading that has so far lived mostly offshore. The deal is subject to regulatory approvals, and until those arrive nothing in it trades [1].
Under the agreement, ICE is the exclusive operator of Trade[XYZ]'s regulated markets and is making a strategic investment in the company. ICE describes it as a minority position and did not disclose the size; the company says it is "not expected to have a material impact" on its 2026 adjusted financial results, capital return or deleveraging plans [1].
The mechanism
A perpetual future is a leveraged contract that never expires, so traders hold exposure for as long as they like, with periodic funding payments between longs and shorts keeping the contract close to the underlying price. In ICE's own words, a perpetual "does not lock in a price for a future date because it never expires" [1].
Trade[XYZ] currently offers eligible users outside the U.S. 24/7 access to perpetual contracts referencing equities, equity indices, commodities and currencies. Hyperliquid supplies the underlying infrastructure; Trade[XYZ] designs the products [1].
The plan is a new, dedicated retail market and clearing structure built on Hyperliquid, run separately from ICE's institutional futures and clearing franchise. KYC/AML-verified customers would reach it through futures commission merchants that become members of the platform. ICE says the release covers approvals "needed to support leveraged trading." It does not name a regulator [1].
The evidence
The release makes the business case plainly. ICE says its participation today is "more than 99% institutional," so retail is "a new and incremental market opportunity," including traders "currently transacting offshore" [1].
Distribution would run through brokers and platforms retail traders already use, including ICE's joint venture with OKX, in which ICE invested earlier this year. That channel carries its own condition: the joint venture's pending approvals as a U.S.-registered broker-dealer and FCM [1].
"We see these perp markets as additive to our futures markets, not a replacement for them," said Jeffrey C. Sprecher, ICE's chair and chief executive [1].
The objection
The obvious worry is contagion: a 24/7 leveraged retail book sitting inside a clearing group that serves commercial hedgers. ICE's answer is structural. It says the separate clearing structure means its commercial hedgers and institutional customers "bear no exposure to the trading or counterparty risk of retail traders on the new Trade[XYZ] platform" [1]. That is a design claim, and it will be tested in the approval process, not in a press release.
The second gap is timing. The release gives no launch date and no regulator, so any schedule attached to this deal today comes from somewhere other than ICE.
The tell
In Le Coin's view, the tell is the first filing that names the regulator and the clearing entity. That document will show whether the separation ICE describes holds up in rule text, and how much leverage retail customers will actually get.
Stop
For now: a signed deal, an exclusive operator and an undisclosed minority stake [1].
