Schroders bond fund moves onto a public blockchain, Centrifuge says

Centrifuge said it launched Schroders' emerging-market bond strategy as tokens on the Solana blockchain. Schroders had not confirmed it on its own channels as of 9:29 a.m. ET; Centrifuge's listing limits buyers to non-U.S. professional investors.

Schroders bond fund moves onto a public blockchain, Centrifuge says

Schroders, the asset manager that reported £867.8 billion of assets under management, including joint ventures and associates, at June 30, now has an emerging-market bond strategy offered as tokens on the Solana blockchain, according to Centrifuge, the company behind the launch [1][2]. Centrifuge said on Nov. 4 that it "launched an emerging markets debt strategy managed by Schroders," and that the launch "will introduce the Schroder International Selection Fund Emerging Market Bond fund, providing tokenized exposure to this Schroders strategy" [1].

A tokenized fund is one whose shares, or a claim tied to them, are recorded as tokens on a blockchain, a shared public ledger. Solana is one such network. Le Coin found no announcement of the launch on Schroders' own website or LinkedIn page as of 9:29 a.m. ET [4].

How it works

Centrifuge sells the technology for issuing fund interests as tokens, according to its website [3]. Schroders' Marita McGinley, its head of operations for Asia-Pacific and global head of digital assets [7], is quoted saying "we are tokenising this specific investment strategy and issuing it on Solana, marking our first deployment on the network," according to Centrifuge's release [1]. Centrifuge says the strategy "initially launches on the Solana network" [1].

The underlying strategy invests in bonds from emerging economies. Centrifuge's release says Schroders "has been investing in emerging markets debt for more than 50 years, with more than 40 dedicated EMD investment professionals" [1]. Schroders' own latest factsheet for the Luxembourg-domiciled fund gives a "Fund size (Million) USD 2,173.50," about $2.17 billion, without printing an as-of date; it lists two conventional share classes and no tokenized one [5]. That is the size of the underlying fund, not of any token issue.

What is stated and what isn't

Centrifuge's case is that the product type is new. "Until now, onchain fixed income has largely been built around cash and short-duration government securities," Anil Sood, Centrifuge's chief strategy and growth officer, said in the release [1]. Centrifuge's own homepage claims "$3B+ tokenized all-time" [3].

Centrifuge's app listing, checked at 9:27 a.m. ET, says the tokens are shares of a British Virgin Islands feeder fund, managed by Anemoy Asset Management Limited, open to non-U.S. professional investors with a minimum of 100,000 USDC, that invests in the fund's A Accumulation USD share class, and it showed assets of $200,442 [6]. Schroders has not published those terms itself.

The objection

This is one company's account of another company's product. Every detail of the launch comes from Centrifuge, which has a commercial interest in it, and Schroders' words appear only inside Centrifuge's release. The terms so far come from Centrifuge's listing, not from Schroders.

The tell (Le Coin's view)

In Le Coin's view, the choice of asset is the point. Tokenized funds from large managers have mostly held cash and short-term government debt, by Centrifuge's own account; Centrifuge's Sood says emerging-market debt "introduces a fundamentally different source of risk and return" [1]. Whether that changes who uses such tokens is not something one listing can show.
