BlackRock and SBI explore yen stablecoin money funds

An Oct. 27 MOU has BlackRock Financial Management, BlackRock Japan, SBI Holdings and Startale exploring a link between tokenized money market funds and JPYSC, SBI's yen trust-type stablecoin. No fund, chain or launch date is named.

BlackRock Financial Management, BlackRock Japan, SBI Holdings and Startale signed a memorandum of understanding on Oct. 27 to explore connecting tokenized money market funds with JPYSC, a yen-denominated trust-type stablecoin, according to matching releases from Startale and SBI Holdings [1][2]. The MOU is not a product launch: neither release names a fund, a chain or a launch date [1][2].

What the partners say they will examine

Under the agreement, the four parties will look at three workstreams: the technology and infrastructure needed to link tokenized MMFs with JPYSC; business models and distribution, using each firm's networks and market access; and regulation and market development for tokenized assets and stablecoins [1][2]. Startale and SBI say the collaboration is open to other market participants, including financial institutions and businesses in Japan and abroad [1][2].

The releases place the work against Japan's Payment Services Act framework for stablecoins, and against a broader push to put traditional products, including MMFs, onto digital rails [1][2]. SBI Holdings says group companies including SBI Global Asset Management have been building onchain products; Startale develops blockchain infrastructure; BlackRock brings global asset-management experience on tokenized MMFs [1][2].

What the principals said

SBI Holdings chairman and president Yoshitaka Kitao said the group issued JPYSC as "Japan's first trust-type yen-denominated stablecoin," and framed onchain finance as a trend Japan must prepare for early if it is not to fall behind [1][2]. Startale CEO Sota Watanabe cast a JPYSC-to-tokenized-MMF link as a step toward onchain-finance foundations and pointed to U.S. tokenization work as context [1][2]. BlackRock Japan president Yukiko Hashimoto said BlackRock aims to bring global expertise to Japan while exploring JPYSC with tokenized money market funds alongside SBI and Startale [1][2]. Jonathan Steel, a managing director at BlackRock Financial Management, said the collaboration reflects a shared commitment to "disciplined innovation" and to infrastructure that can connect traditional finance with digital-asset ecosystems [1][2].

The objection

An MOU of this kind is a study agenda, not a live product. The releases do not say which MMF would be tokenized, on which ledger JPYSC or any tokenized shares would sit, who would custody either side, or when any pilot might run [1][2]. Japan has a stablecoin legal frame under the Payment Services Act, but the partners themselves say infrastructure, distribution and regulatory work still have to be built before tokenized assets and stablecoins connect at scale [1][2]. Until a named fund, a named chain or a dated filing appears, the public record is the exploration itself.

The tell

In Le Coin's view, the tell is whether the three workstreams produce a concrete pilot: a named tokenized MMF sleeve, a disclosed settlement path with JPYSC, and a date that can be checked against a filing or product page [1][2]. A second tell is whether other banks join the open collaboration the releases invite [1][2]. Neither is in today's MOU.
